文言文

从公元前后直至近代，古代中国的文言文一直发挥着通用语、以及外交语言的作用。汉字文化圈国家的口头语言（口语）差异很大，互相不能理解，而书面的汉字却起着疏通意思的作用。

法语

18世纪欧洲各国贵族欣赏法国的生活方式，法语也成了各国的宫廷语言。直到1920年代以前，法语是欧洲外交场合的通用语。到了1920年代以后至今，法语的国际通用语言的地位，渐渐地被后起的英语所取代。
