生平

出生在费城，求学于宾州。费城的印地安人与美国华人是他最早的民族学研究对象，并对他们所玩的局戏、牌戏深感兴趣， 而迈入对各地传统游戏的收集与研究。

库林在芝加哥哥伦布纪念博览会展览各种棋牌游戏，遇到Frank Hamilton Cushing，以后两人就一起研究。

1892年，库林在宾州大学考古学与人类学博物馆当任主管。1895年，他写出第一本著作：《高丽游戏》（ Games），短短几年又写《印地安游戏》（American Indian Games）、《夏威夷游戏》（Hawaiian Games）、《菲律宾游戏》（Philippine Games ） 。

1903年，库林成为布鲁克林博物馆中人类学部门的馆长。

库林著作颇多，他和务谨顺等人对麻将等中国牌戏的研究至今也是重要书目。
