丽塔·海华斯有西班牙血统，她出生于纽约布鲁克林，原名玛格丽塔·卡门·坎西诺（Margarita Carmen Cansino）。坎西诺家族曾是一个西班牙舞蹈世家。海华斯自小接受舞蹈训练，并于十二岁时登台演出。
