生平

他生于布达佩斯的一个犹太人家庭。1941年跟随父母(Klara Kornfield 与 Henry Lax，都是医生)移民美国纽约市，并就读于史岱文森高中 。1948年，他与数学家Anneli Cahn结婚。

1947年他获得纽约大学数学学士，1949年又取得博士学位，辅导老师是Kurt O. Friedrichs。
