早年生活及角色

劳埃德出生于美国内布拉斯加州布尔夏德县，父母为詹姆斯·达西·劳埃德（James Darsie Lloyd，1865–1947）和伊丽莎白·弗雷泽（Elizabeth Fraser，1869–1941），而他父亲的曾祖父和曾祖母皆来自威尔士。小劳埃德的名字是他的爷爷起的。他有一个年长他5岁的哥哥叫盖洛德（Gaylord，1888-1943）。盖洛德跟他的弟弟一样演电影，但其职业生涯远不及哈罗德出名。盖洛德出演的其中一个角色就是在1921年电影《Disraeli》中饰演著名的乔治·亚利斯（George Arliss）。劳埃德的帮助更使他变成一个喜剧明星，最后成为了电影执行制片人。劳埃德的父母在他年幼的时候离了婚，而劳埃德选择与他的父亲待在一起。尽管如此，他和他的哥哥一直与他们的母亲保持亲近。劳埃德的父亲一直在编造宏伟的快速致富计划，最后却以彻底失败而告终。他们最终抵达了奥马哈市，在那里的股票公司，劳埃德得到了第一次演戏经历。他在东高中（East High School）和圣地牙哥高中（San Diego High School）上过学，却在圣地牙哥戏剧艺术学院（School of Dramatic Art of San Diego）进行了表演培训。1912年，劳埃德的父亲被奥马哈市的啤酒卡车碾压，而后在人身伤害的判决中，他得到了当时数目不菲的六千美元金额（虽然最终他和他的律师分摊了这笔钱）。据传，劳埃德的父亲和他靠掷钱币做出了西迁的决定。
